FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nanaimo, BC – Tamara Kronis, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo—Ladysmith, issued the following statement today on the delivery of federal funding for Loaves and Fishes Food Bank in Nanaimo to make a new distribution centre a reality:

“Communities across Vancouver Island received welcome confirmation that the long-promised federal funding for Loaves & Fishes Community Food Bank is finally being delivered.

“The $5 million federal grant will help Loaves & Fishes complete its centralized food recovery and distribution facility in Nanaimo, which is already under construction. When complete, the project will bring together work being done by Loaves & Fishes across multiple locations, helping strengthen food recovery and distribution at a time when families, seniors, and local organizations struggle with the continually rising cost of living.

“I want to especially recognize the leadership of Peter Sinclair and his entire team, as well as the strong partnership with the City of Nanaimo, the Province of British Columbia, and all the donors and volunteers who have supported Loaves & Fishes in its mission.

“Food insecurity remains a daily reality for far too many people in our communities. Loaves & Fishes recovers surplus food locally, sorts it, and redirects it to schools, households, and community partners. Their work not only supports people in need but also reduces food waste and strengthens local supply chains.

“I congratulate Loaves & Fishes and countless community members for their persistence and perseverance. It is through our collective action and advocacy for this project on behalf of those in need that we are able to celebrate together today.

“The work Loaves & Fishes does makes a real difference for individuals and families across Vancouver Island who struggle to put food on the table, and now even more people will be helped. I am pleased to see this commitment finally turning into action.”
